Public Safety Committee

Overview
1.0 Role

Prepare and administer an Emergency Measures plan for Sunbury-York South Rural Community and identify community safety concerns.

2.0 Responsibilities

The committee will provide input and community representation in developing, preparing, and administrating the Emergency Measures Plan. Members will attend meetings, participate in tabletop and simulation exercises if available, and assist in an emergency where applicable. The Committee will identify concerns, collaborate with stakeholders and provide suggestions to the Council to improve Public Safety in the Sunbury-York South Rural Community.

 

4.0 Meetings

The Public Safety Committee will meet monthly on the third Monday of the month.

3.0 Membership

The Public Safety Committee will consist of a minimum of six members and a maximum of ten members, as well as the CAO (CHIEF ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER)/Clerk and/or Assistant Clerk, one council member/Director, and six to ten community members.  A committee member who does not uphold their responsibilities or misses more than 25% of meetings without a reasonable explanation will be asked by the Chair to resign from the Committee. If the member refuses to resign, a vote shall be taken on removing the member from the Committee.

As per the SYSRC Procedural Bylaw 1;

The committees will comprise the Members of the Council, the CAO/Clerk, and the Treasurer. Other senior staff will attend to make presentations and answer questions as required.

The Council may establish or abolish committees of the Council. The Council- CAO- department heads or senior staff may appoint, to such committees, members who are qualified voters of the local government.

Public Safety Committee is currently not accepting new members.

Economic and Community Development Committee

Overview
The role of the Economic and Community Development Committee is to drive community growth, give direction on areas such as land planning and development, and lead our community of Sunbury-York South forward.

Responsibilities
  • Provide direction during the creation of a new community plan that will encompass all SYSRC, which by law must be completed by 2028.
  • Liaise with CRSC during the planning phase.
  • Identify and address gaps in land use planning.
  • Identify strategies to build the community by creating revenue streams through tourism and community initiatives.
  • Help bring businesses and people into the community to encourage sustainable growth while protecting the rural nature of SYSRC.
  • Provide direction on using and protecting existing environmental and community assets.
  • Examples include: forests, trails, waterways, aquifers, etc.
  • Encourage forward thinking development of the community for self-sustainability based on economic and technological trends.
  • Examples include: reliable high speed internet, high efficiency building standards in new construction (Energy Star®, R-2000), etc.
Membership
The Economic and Community Development Committee will consist of between 3 to 7 individuals (maximum number of members is seven, and no more than three elected councillors per Committee as per the SYSRC Procedural Bylaw).

These individuals will consist of 3 Council members and up to 4 members of the public, ideally two from each Ward. Characteristics of members can include: those with land planning experience, business knowledge, extensive knowledge of and experience within the community, and other areas of expertise as they may arise. These members will be selected based on the current project and/or goal of the Committee and may be rotated out once this project or goal is complete at the discretion of the Chair.

Experts can be called to be an observer or temporary participant (such as CRSC, Ignite, ACOA, etc.) but will not be a full committee member and shall not count towards the member list.
