The Council of SYSRC would like to acknowledge and thank Mr. Cory Allen for his leadership, input and perspectives provided during this short period in office and express that we are deeply saddened by his decision to resign. Serving in elected office requires a significant commitment of time and energy, and we appreciate the effort he devoted to the role. We respect his right to a personal view and opinion but would like to also present an alternate point of view to the statements enclosed in his letter as we do not believe they completely align with the unfolded events. While we respect his experience and understand that his time as Mayor did not meet his expectations, it is important to recognize that others may have experienced the same events differently.
First and foremost, we recognize that this Council is not comprised of trained politicians and that, both individually and collectively, we have much to learn as we work to address community concerns and meet the level of service that our constituents expect and deserve. However, it is important to recognize that Council’s actions and decisions reflect a collective effort. Individual members contribute their views and experiences, but the responsibility for shaping and implementing community initiatives rests with Council
as a whole.
This balancing act, this creative tension, may present itself at times in various ways and while Council`s desire is to overall help improve the motions brought forward by members in support of generally considered positive initiatives, it is also the role of Council members to explore every possible way in which such initiative might fail in order to certify the viability of the process. Council members have a responsibility to carefully scrutinize proposals, ask questions, and express differing viewpoints. Robust discussion and debate are not signs of dysfunction. They are fundamental parts of democratic governance. While disagreement can sometimes be frustrating, it should not be mistaken for a lack of collaboration or commitment to the community.
While there may be differing views on past events, we believe all members of Council have shared a common goal: to make decisions they believe are in the best interests of Sunbury-York South Rural Community and its residents. We remain committed to working together respectfully, considering diverse perspectives, and continuing the important work of serving our community. Members of Council are supported and encouraged to bring forth initiatives, arguments and projects for the betterment of our community.
We remained committed to the principles of transparency and accountability and welcome public input on all matters of Council, whether is expressed as support or as a concern, and would encourage all members of public to reach out to council or individual council members for input or information.
We wish Mr. Allen well in his future endeavors and thank him for his service to the residents of Sunbury-York South Rural Community.
